Drywall Repair & Surface Restoration

Olympus patches, repairs and restores the wall first, so the new paint sits on a sound surface and the repair disappears.

Chapter 01

What makes a drywall patch show through fresh paint?

Wallpaper comes off and takes the paper face of the drywall with it, leaving torn, fuzzy patches. Nails back out and leave small domes. Seams crack along the tape. Each of these looks minor on a bare wall and looks large once a satin coat goes over it.

The classic failure is the patch that flashes. Joint compound is more porous than the painted wall around it, so unprimed filler drinks paint differently and shows as a dull square under side light. A bulge from over-thick filler throws a shadow every afternoon when the sun crosses the room.

How does Olympus repair a wall before it gets painted?

The damaged section is cut back to sound board, taped and filled with joint compound in thin coats rather than one heavy pass. Each coat dries before the next, then gets feathered wide at the edges so the repair fades into the wall instead of ending at a ridge. Floors and furniture are covered before sanding starts.

Once the surface is sanded smooth, the patch gets its own primer so it takes paint at the same rate as the wall around it. That is the sequence behind the project Katie W. describes: wallpaper removed, drywall fixed, and then the ceiling, entertainment center and beams painted, all in one job.

Chapter 03

Why does the repair come before the color?

Paint magnifies whatever is underneath it. A good color on a rough wall just shows you the roughness in a richer tone. That is why Nate treats surface restoration as part of the painting, not an add-on, and why a room like the one pictured here, cream and half emptied of furniture, is where the real work begins.

Fixing it first also means you only paint once, and the finish lasts. Call Nate at (419) 283-1282 and he will walk the walls with you around Maumee, Perrysburg, Sylvania or Toledo, point out what needs repair, and set it all down in a detailed, no-obligation estimate.

“His work is incredible! We would definitely recommend him and use him again!” Katie W.
