Surface Preparation & Moisture Control

Cleaning, repair and moisture control before a coat goes on, so the paint stays on the wall.

Chapter 01

Why does fresh paint let go of a damp or dirty surface?

Paint does not grip dust, chalk, grease or damp. Put a new coat over any of them and it sits on top like a sticker, then lifts at the first hard freeze or the first wet summer. The finish looks fine for a season and then the peeling starts.

Algae and mildew are the usual giveaway. The garden shed in the Olympus gallery, shown here before preparation, had peeling white paint and a green band of algae along its base. Painting straight over that would only have sealed the problem in.

What does preparation actually involve?

It begins with cleaning: removing dirt, algae, mildew and anything else loose. Failing coatings are scraped or taken back to a sound edge, and cracks, holes and damaged areas are repaired so the new coat has an even surface to sit on.

Then comes the harder question of why the surface got wet or stained at all. Where moisture is the cause, it has to be controlled before painting, and the right primer goes on for the material underneath. Nate walks the site first and explains what he finds before any work is priced.

Chapter 03

Why is preparation most of the job?

Olympus puts it plainly: proper preparation, quality materials and proven techniques, no shortcuts, just work that lasts. The final coat takes the least time on a well-prepared surface, and the hours spent before it are what decide whether the result holds.

That is true for a home in Perrysburg and for a commercial building in Toledo alike. Scope, timeline and estimate are outlined in writing, and Olympus is fully insured. To have a surface looked at, call (419) 283-1282, Monday to Friday, 8AM to 7PM.
